How to Measure Sliding Door Rollers

There are hundreds of sliding door rollers, and the wrong one will not fit. The good news is that four measurements, plus a photo, match almost any roller. You need the old roller out of the panel to measure it properly.

Steps

  1. Wheel diameter

Measure across the wheel itself, edge to edge. Common sizes are 3/4", 7/8", 1", 1-1/4", 1-1/2" and 2".

  2. Housing width

Measure the thickness of the metal or plastic housing, side to side. Common sizes are 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" and 1".

  3. Housing length and height

Measure the housing end to end and top to bottom. These decide whether it fits the pocket in your panel.

  4. Wheel type and edge

Note whether the wheel is steel, nylon or plastic, and look at its edge: grooved to ride on a raised rail (most common), flat, or a V-groove.

  5. Single or tandem

Count the wheels in one housing. Heavy and impact doors often use tandem housings with two wheels.

  6. Take photos

Photograph the roller from the side and the end, next to a ruler. A photo settles most questions.
