A sticky or leaking sliding door does not usually mean you need a new one. Most problems live in small, replaceable parts: rollers, locks, handles and seals.
Repair makes sense when
- The frame is straight and not corroded through
- The glass is intact, or only the glass is damaged
- The problem is sticking, grinding, locking or a leak at the seals
- You like the door and it fits the opening
Replacement makes sense when
- The frame is bent, rotted or badly corroded
- You want impact rating for insurance or code
- The door is so old that parts are no longer made
- You are remodeling and want a different size or style
Price-wise, a roller replacement typically runs a few hundred dollars at most, while a new installed slider usually costs thousands. See the Price Index for typical Florida ranges.
