Live within a few miles of the Atlantic or the Gulf and your sliding door works harder. Salt spray settles on the hardware, and every trip back from the beach brings sand into the track.
What salt does
Standard steel rollers and lock parts corrode. Once a roller rusts, it stops turning and drags on the rail, wearing a groove into the track. Handles pit and locks get stiff.
Habits that help
- Wipe the track with fresh water every couple of weeks
- Vacuum sand out weekly in summer
- Use dry silicone only, never oil or grease
- Keep mats inside and outside the door
- Rinse the frame after storms
Parts that last longer
When rollers do need replacing near the coast, choose stainless steel rollers. They cost a little more but hold up far better in salt air. Stainless track caps can save a worn aluminum rail without replacing the frame.
